ROOMING HOUSE LICENSING

All interested parties are welcome to forward their concerns/view to this Association.

PUBLIC MONEY PAYS FOR PRIVATE ENTERPRISE SECURITY

t is our belief that high risk operations should provide their own security services to curtail crime and violence associated with their business operations. Rooming houses are business enterprises, and if their owners choose high risk locations for their operations, they should absorb the cost for their security through other means than ongoing police interventions.

The amount of violence associated with rooming houses in the area, has a most negative effect on our community. Business is leaving as demonstrated by the departure of the Trebas Institute and A Culinary Affair Restaurant. Continued exposure to crime and violence affects the neighbourhood children and students and threatens the area residents' welfare.

GDRA AND ROOMING HOUSE OPERATIONS

1. We oppose any new licenses being issued in our neighbourhood as we have a disproportionate number of such establishments in our community – 41 legal and approximately 15 illegal rooming houses in an area of less than 1 km sq.
2. We oppose illegal rooming houses and urge the authorities to take decisive action against such operations that put at risk their residents and their neighbours.
